About this Pei : 

Blue came into rescue due to death of his owner and remaining family unable to provide for his care.  He was kenneled at his vet’s office after owner’s death until he was rescued and moved to a foster home.   Initially, he had a hard time adjusting to his foster home and kept to himself interacting minimally with his foster mom.  “… he would slink around with his tail down.”  He has since come around and his foster mom has this to say about him… “This dog is now happy. He is allowing me to pet him and hug him. He is giving kisses.”

Blue was underweight upon arrival at his foster home but is eating well and gaining weight appropriately.  “Once we take care of his eye, ear and skin infections and put some more weight on this guy he will be a different dog.  He is a great little guy.”

About this Pei:   Mazzy has come into rescue after the divorce of her humans.  She had bonded with her human dad but was left behind when he left the home as result of the divorce.  Mazzy did not adjust well to this separation and began not getting along well with her Shar-Pei brother.  She is now in a foster home with several other dog foster siblings and enjoys playing with them and has demonstrated no aggressive behaviors since arrival to foster home.  She has now bonded with her foster dads so may be best suited in a home with her very own forever dad.  She loves to snuggle with her foster dads and has made herself right at home sleeping in the human bed.

About this Pei: Chip is a mini Pei but not when it comes to personality! He is happy and friendly to everyone he meets!! It has healed and causes him no problems.........he is a happy go lucky little boy. Mushy was found wandering around a suburb of Atlanta. He is an active, extremely friendly boy. He has not shown any signs of aggression even when his severely infected ears were cleaned and treated. His entropion is severe and he rarely opens his eyes more than a crack in order to maneuver around his environment. His eye surgery is going to be scheduled as soon as possible and this boy will be ready for a new home.
He is perfect for a single owner or family. He follows me around the house and stays close just in case I want to pet him.  He plays well with his female Shar-Pei mix fostermate, so a home with another dog would be good.

About this Pei :
I was dropped off at a kill shelter by my owner. I was very confused and scared. A nice woman from Shar-Pei Rescue of Tennessee picked me up and transported me to my foster mom. I was very scared and did not behave well. Now, I know I am safe so I am behaving better.
Ginger has been slowly recovering from the separation from her owner.  She is loving, playful and happy.  She has learned to use the doggie door and goes out on her own. Otherwise she stays very close to me.  Ginger is a lively girl, loves to cuddle, loves to ride in the car, and is extremely playful.  She can sit, stay, and comes on command.

Since Ginger’s move from her initial foster home, she has settled in nicely with her Shar-Pei sister so should do fine in a home with other dogs.  Ginger does not have an alpha personality so should get along with both male and female dogs.

Just out of curiosity, Ginger’s foster mom had a DNA test done on Ginger to see what her mix actually is, and the results are in…  As it turns out, Ginger is 1/3 Shar-Pei.  She is also 1/3 Cocker spaniel and has a bit of doberman and Shetland sheepdog in her mix.  Ginger carries a lot of Shar-Pei characteristics but should be less likely to suffer from the breed specific health issues commonly occurring with Shar-Pei.  She is adapting nicely to her foster home but would love to have a forever home of her very own.  Could that possibly be with you?

My family could no longer take care of me because I needed eye surgery so they sent me to Cobb County animal services. I was very scared until my foster mom rescued me. I had my surgery for my eyes and can see much better now and they don’t hurt. I now live with my foster mom and three other Shar-Pei. We all get to play together.

About this Pei :   Maa-Goo is an absolute love.  She is friendly, smart, loves to play and run outside.  She loves to ride in the car.  Knows what “no” means, sits on command, and loves to sleep in the humans’ bed.  She is an adorable pet and will make an awesome addition to any family.  Having a fenced yard would be great for her.  She has escaped the fenced yard at her foster home but immediately comes when called.  This girl loves attention.

Maa-Goo came to rescue via Panama City where a very concerned vet did all that she could to help make sure she got to a place where people would take care of her and find her the loving home she deserves.  Maa-Goo’s eyes were in pretty bad shape when she arrived, we weren’t sure how much vision she had so we immediately made arrangements for her to be seen by an opthamologist who prescribed some drops and ointment for her eyes to start while awaiting a surgery date.  To Maa-Goo’s foster parents’ surprise, after dropping her off on the day of surgery, they had only gotten back on the road toward home when they received a call telling them to come back and get her because she didn’t need surgery at all after having had the medications that had been prescribed.  The drops and ointment had healed her ulcerated eyes and restored her vision.  This pretty girl can see again and has now been spayed so is eagerly awaiting her new forever home.

About this Pei :   Nala came to rescue as an owner surrender due to health issues of her owner.  Nala was pregnant when she was surrendered.  Arrangements were made for her to be fostered by a puppy nanny who could help with delivery of her puppies and care for both Nala and puppies after delivery.  Nala became a proud Momma of 6 puppies the day after arriving to her foster home.  Nala is heartworm positive due to no heartworm prevention and having lived primarily outside at her former home.  

Nala is a very happy, waggy-tail, loving girl.  She did a great job mothering her pups, who have now all been adopted.  She is cat friendly, dog friendly, kid friendly, even infant friendly.  Unfortunately, she doesn’t yet know any commands and is very busy.  She will do well in an active home, possibly with school-age children who will enjoy playing with her.  A home with a fenced yard would be great so she has room to run and play safely.  Nala is such a loving girl that she will likely do well in any home that has time to receive all the love and devotion she has to give.

Lizzie has come back to FSPR after having been adopted and then moved to the home of a relative of her adoptive family.  Lizzie, unfortunately, spent a lot of time tied outside at this relative’s home and eventually ended up back in doggie jail.  Thank goodness the shelter staff contacted FSPR through Lizzie’s microchip registration so her former foster mom could rescue her, again.

Lizzie is a very sweet, small girl and makes an awesome family pet, although she is a little nervous around people carrying anything that resembles a stick.  She was traumatized previously when the children in her home chased her with sticks.  She does love to cuddle with her foster mom and likes playing with stuffy toys, too.

I am Amos and recently moved from Alabama to Georgia when I was rescued from doggie jail by the nice people at Florida Shar Pei Rescue.

I had a rough time at the shelter and seeing the doctor was quite traumatic for me, too.  I was so scared because I haven’t been feeling good for a little while now.  The doctor said my heart and lungs sound good. He put me on some medicine and Heartguard to treat the worms in my heart. I have something called a bacterial skin infection and an urinary tract infection with bladder crystals. I guess that’s why my skin is so itchy and I have to pee so much.  The doctor says I have to take medicine for 2 whole weeks to make these infections go away. My ears are infected, too, and, yep, I am on medicine for that, too. My foster mom says I am still very skinny and need to gain some weight but with all these pills I don’t know if there will be room for food in my belly, too. I need entropion surgery for my lower eyelids and something called neutering. Foster Mom says, “I think that he should be in much better shape in a couple weeks after good food and TLC. I am sure he was very stressed at the city pound.”  Boy is she right about that!  I am so glad to have been rescued by FSPR.  After I get better I am going to be looking for my very own forever home.  If you think that can be with you, please fill out an adoption application!

Hi, I’m Chucky! I was found on January 15th wandering the streets of Daytona Beach and spent a few days at the Halifax Humane Society. Fortunately, I am now sharing a house with three Shar Pei girls and two cats. We all get along great. There is a doggie door with a large fenced yard so I can wander around and enjoy all of the smells. Being in the country gives me all kinds of things to sniff. My vision is impaired due to glaucoma so I have to have medicine drops put in every day.  The eye doctor man says the drops will help keep the pressure down.  I have no idea what he is talking about but whatever the pressure is, I don’t let it slow me down since my nose and ears work fine. I have learned voice commands especially “step” so I know when to slow down for the deck stairs.
My foster mom says this about me, “Chucky enjoys playing and is incredibly gentle. He loves to hold my hand or forearm in his mouth and never leaves a mark. He also like to take my fingers in his mouth and gently chew on them. Very sweet. His favorite place is in the kitchen so he knows right where I am. Chucky is not food aggressive and will let the girls takes his treats or push him away from his food if I let them. The best thing is he likes my old cats – goes nose to nose with them and then walks away.”

Hi everyone-

My name is Maggie (short for Magnolia). I was found wandering around Miami and since I had no one to care for me I got into a bunch of fleas and they ate up a LOT of my fur and made my skin red and itchy. Some people came by and picked me up. They took me to a place called a shelter. At least I was not on the street anymore! The best part is that someone came to see me from a shar-pei rescue and they took me home with them to start getting me better. Chanel really wants human contact. She knows basic commands like sit, shake, high five, and “hugs”. She walks very well on a leash and did great visiting Pet Supermarket with other large breed dogs. She gets excited to see children and behaves very nicely when being petted and loved. Her leash manners are good, but she is very strong. We think she may be mostly Shar-Pei with some American Bullmastiff or American Bulldog. She loves belly rubs, muzzle massages, and squeaky toys. She has not done well with smaller dogs that overwhelm her and would do best with a big lazy guy or as an only girl, and she does go in her kennel nicely. Chanel has a smooth short dark coat with some barely visible brown undertones. She has the characteristic purple/black Pei tongue but bigger ears (no ear infections!) and a longer tail that bunches up near her bum and wags like crazy. Chanel is very happy to lie on her back and toss a stuffy toy or sit on the couch with her human. Give this gal a chance? My name is Deacon and I am brand new to Florida Shar Pei Rescue.  A very nice lady rescued me from my home where I spent all the time outside.  She saw I had these things called cherries in my eyes and said I needed to go to a doctor to get them out.  I’m not really sure what any of that means but I am happy to be here and get to sleep inside now.  I do still like to play outside and I really like to be close to my humans and give lots of kisses.

About this Pei : Elsa is a sweet southern gal from Tennessee, who was owner surrendered to a shelter and made her way to Florida.  This young girl has adapted very well to her Florida foster home and gets along with the kids, the resident pei, and the cat.  She is a strong-willed girl, but what else would you expect from a true southern belle? 🙂

One of Elsa’s foster moms in Tennessee had this to say about her, “She is incredibly sweet and good natured.  Great with people.  Loves to play and doesn’t play too rough.  She is comfortable being hugged and doesn’t mind being touched around her face, ears, or paws.  She is not destructive so can be left alone, but she likes to be able to see her humans.  She can be stubborn, though, and will sit down when on a leash and not wanting to go where she is being led.  Overall she is a great dog and would do well in an active home.”

June 2016 Update

Hi, I’m Ping! I came to Florida from the big city in Georgia. When I was found, back in January, I was very sad and sickly. My eyes were pretty darn bad, too. They hurt me every single day.  I felt awful and sure didn’t feel loved, but thanks to the nice people at Florida Chinese Shar Pei Rescue, that has all changed!

My foster mommy loves me very much. She gives me lots of hugs and good food. She thinks I’m plump and calls me “Piggy Piggy Ping-Ping.” I think it’s my lush and beautiful, fluffy-as-a-cloud cream coat that makes me look bigger, but…whatever! Haha! I do like to eat!

Even though I don’t see very well, I’m smart and use my other senses. I had eye surgery in March and boy, what a relief that was. Changed my life.  I’m not on eye drops anymore but may be in the future. And now, I love when mommy rubs and cleans my eyes!

Now on to the important things in life: TOYS. I have so many and I love them all. I carry them around wherever I go and I’ll share them with you. I also love to be in my backyard in the fresh air and sunshine! Nobody ties me up anymore and I’m free to run and roam, and hunt lizard shadows. I’m really good at it.

Ruger is on medical hold for eye surgery.  His sight is compromised but the eye doctor has high hopes for a good outcome following surgery.  His eyes have are already showing improvement with drops 4 X day.  His skin is in very poor condition and he is underweight.   He is on medication and medicated baths for his skin. His skin is getting better and his coat is coming in nicely with good food and the medication.  Ruger is up to date on all vaccines, microchipped, neutered, and is heartworm negative.About this Pei :
Ruger is a very laid back, calm fellow.  He has excellent house manners.  No accidents in the house at all.  He does not chew or get in the trash.  Ruger does not steal food from counters or table tops.  He is not a barker. Ruger’s foster mom said, “This is the easiest dog I have ever had for eye drops.  He stands quietly and just lets me put the drops in his eyes.”  Such a good boy.  Ruger does not appear to know basic commands, but he walks nicely on a leash.  Ruger loves his walks.  He gets very excited when he sees preschoolers at the park.  It is suspected that his former family had small children.  Ruger is presently living with three other Pei in his foster home.  He has demonstrated no food or toy aggression at all.  He plays well with the other Pei and even likes the neighbor’s cat.  This is a very loving guy who wants very much to bond with his humans.  He clearly loves attention and hangs out close to his foster parents in the house.  Ruger is a big boy at 65 pounds and counting.  He will top out at around 75-80 lbs at a good weight.  Ruger needs to be big because his heart is much too large, full of love, for a small-frame dog. 🙂  His new family will have to commit to feeding only premium grain-free food, and he may need eye drops and/or ointment long-term due to the damage from longtime entropion.  This boy was surrendered to a very good no-kill shelter due to his family being financially compromised and no longer able to provide for him.  He is not believed to have been abused or neglected.  His family seemed to have truly loved him, just simply became unable to care for him.

FSPR is working on a special project — Trixie.

UPDATE #3:  Trixie has had her surgery and it was successful.  She is now on the road to recovery and has stolen many hearts along the way, including those of her foster family!  It looks like Trixie has found her forever home right where she is.  Her foster family has decided to adopt her.

UPDATE #2:  After much contemplation and several professional consults, FSPR has decided it is in Trixie’s best interest to move forward with amputation of her paralyzed left front leg.  Her tentative surgery date is mid-March.  Trixie is growing into a delightful dog and will make a wonderful pet after her rehab is complete.

UPDATE #1:  Trixie is now around 4 months old and has been evaluated by 2 neurologists.  Unfortunately, the prognosis for saving her leg isn’t a positive one.  It is the recommendation of both neurologists that her leg be amputated due to nerve damage that cannot be reversed.  Our final attempt to save Trixie’s leg will be a consult with a prosthetics specialist who would like to make a brace if possible and avoid amputation.  No matter the outcome, Trixie is a delightful girl and will adapt to whatever is decided to be best for her.

Trixie is a 12 week old female shar-pei, who came to us after being found on a golf course in central Florida.  She was presumably injured and this injury resulted in nerve damage causing paralysis of her left front paw.  Upon initial veterinary examination, after joining FSPR, she was found to have some pain in the left shoulder so the doctor believes that is likely where the injury occurred and this caused radial nerve paralysis.  We have consulted with an orthopedic veterinary office and our next step is a neurology veterinarian to determine the extent of the damage and the best possible treatment plan.  There is a possibility her left front leg will require amputation.  Trixie is doing well and will be available for adoption but not for some time, yet.  Adoption applications are not yet being accepted for Trixie as we are unsure of the timeline for her medical care.  Please, check back often to see updates on this cutie-Pei!  Here is a little sneak peek for you…

Hi, everyone.  My name is Rocky and I am a flowered shar pei.  I was dumped by my owner in a doggy jail place at the end of March.  I thought I had a get out of jail free card when one rescue group put a hold on me and said they were coming to pick me up.  The next thing I knew they backed out because they thought I was mean.  I was so sad and scared, but I was never mean at all.  I am, usually, a very happy guy even though my health is not very good right now.  I am out of doggy jail now thanks to another rescue, the awesome Florida Shar Pei Rescue, and I have the bestest foster mom a guy could ask for.  She took me to the vet the day after she picked me up from doggy jail and the vet doctor said I have some problems that I am going to need help with.  I have infections in both of my eyes and both of my ears.  I need to see an eye specialist as soon as I recover from the infections because I can’t see very good. I also have something called demodectic mange.  I don’t really know what that is but it makes me itchy and some of my fur has come out from it.  I have now been in my foster home for a few days and I am making myself right at home.  I am really enjoying getting love and the medicines I need to feel better.  My pei foster sisters and brother are nice to me and my foster parents give me hugs and kisses all the time.  I am such a lucky guy to have been rescued by the great people at FSPR.  I know they will do everything they can to help me get healthy so I can, one day, find a real forever home of my very own.

Sunshine is the sweetest little thing!  She came from Miami with a large wound on her back.  She has been examined by a vet and he thinks that someone poured hot oil all over her to cause the burns from her head to her mid-back.  She has been mistreated and was not taken care of medically.  She had heartworms but has been treated for those and is now heartworm-free. Sunni tolerates the other foster dogs that share her foster home but would be better suited in a home with no other dogs.  She is a total love bug and lap dog with people. Yuma is a classic  traditional SharPei. Very proud happy girl. She was left by her family, at a shelter. She had a difficult time there. She came in with a companion and they separated them. She was terrified.
She is doing great now. She will be ready soon.

About this Pei : 
Hi, my name is Yuma.  I came to a very scary place with my family.  I was ok until they said I had to stay but they left. They took my best doggy friend away and put me in jail.  I was so scared, I just kept yelling at the people to let me go home. Nobody would listen.  I wouldn’t eat, but that didn’t seem to matter.
Then some people came to save me.  I had to ride forever.  I was not happy.  I just wanted to go home.
Now I’m with my foster family. I yelled at them, too, at first, but I did eat all the good food they gave me.  After awhile, I figured out that they are so nice so I stopped yelling at them.  My foster dad is so patient and good to me.  I like to lick his and mom’s fingers.  I feel safe here.  I like my foster friends, too.
I would like to go to my forever home, when the doctor says I’m ready.  If you like me, ask if you can get me.  I’m a really nice little girl.

Hello, my name is Henry. I’m a quiet, little man. I love everybody, and I’m happy to give kisses. I love to lay by my foster mom’s feet and get my head scratched and my ears rubbed. Mom says I’m a very gentle dog.

Henry was an abuse case. He was confiscated from the owners in Tampa. He is the most gentle, sweet doggie. He would make a great family member for your home.

Sweet Hank has found his forever home with another FSPR alum brother in Orlando. His new mom had this to say:
